Farewell Old Friend

Yesterday saw the sad passing of a dear old friend. Having spent the last couple of years languishing in disused abandonment, I decide it was time to pass poor old Laney on to someone who would use him and make him feel loved, a service I had been unable to provide for a long, long time.

Good old Laney. I picked him up quite by accident, from an advert in a newsagent's window. There amongst the French polishers and nannies he was sitting, and cheap as well. I had to have him. I raced home with the number written down, hoping he was still available. He was and he was to be mine.

I think I got him in back in early 1998 - he lived at my parents house until me and Mrs Dio moved back to Cardiff after our 3 years in the wilderness of Bangor. There was no stopping us. At every opportunity I would get him out and fiddle with him, usually when Mrs Dio had gone to bed or was away for the day. He was noisy as well. God did he give his all.

He helped to define the Meltwater sound with his lovely old fashioned spring reverb and understated grunge. He was never faithful, always happy to have any instruments plugged in to him - he made them all sound good on tape with his nice line out. He could take a good beating as well, didn't mind getting bumped about.

Ragged and a bit worse for wear, I recently decided that the likely hood of me picking up the guitar again was slim and I needed the vast amount of space he was taking up. With heavy heart I sold him on.

On the plus side, he will at least be getting out and seeing the world, doing gigs and stuff. Richard of Jonah bought him and should have been gigging with him tonight at the Barfly. I only hope he gave as good for Richard as he used to for me, and didn't blow up in disgust. If you ever see Jonah, say hello to Laney from me and send my love.

As an added bonus, you can see Laney in action here - this short video is the only footage of Meltwater in existence. The track we are playing we never finished, but it sounds pretty good to me. I'm doing most of the filming for the first half before Dave Hollins get's all arty with some views of Cardiff Bay. Click the picture below to enjoy the quicktime movie. Heady days. :)
