Lake Vyrnwy Trip

Last week we decided to take a road trip up north. Mrs Dio has always wanted to stay at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel, so we finally booked a room and made the trip. It's not an area I've ever visited before, the lake is situated in the Berwyn Mountains, just a but south of the Snowdonia National Park. The run up was great, up through the Preselis, along the coast via previous holiday destinations Cardigan and New Quay, up via Aberystwyth then up through Mychynlleth and then through lots of twisty country lanes into the middle of nowhere. Proper road trip fodder.

We had a lakeside view from the room we'd booked, and I have to say it was absolutely amazing, a really breathtaking vista. The hotel was awesome as well, really characterful and of a high standard. The first few photos show the hotel and the view from our room.

The first day we were there we went to visit the Sculpture Park at Llanwyddyn. Most of it was pretty bog standard hewn from wood sculpture park nonsense. But there were a couple I liked and most of all the house on a stick. Here's a few pictures from the park.

We had the one night at the hotel, a hearty breakfast then headed off around the lakeside drive. There's a view of the hotel from the opposite site of the lake, then a number of photos from out trek up from the northern end of the lake to the waterfall at Rhaeadr. It was an amazing trek through fields of newly born lambs and dry stone walls to the waterfall. Elis loved being out in the mountains, and so did we. The light came and went, and lots of photos were snapped.

We stopped for tea at Aberystwyth on the way back, and Aberaron on the way up. I really can't stress how lovely a road journey it is. Yes it's hard work with all the hills, lorries and tractors and stuff, but going slow allows you to take in some lovely scenery and atmosphere. It was a really lovely trip, my only regret was that we didn't have longer.
